Queen of Spam

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to experience the Minnesota State Fair. Over the course of a 10 day period from the end of August through Labor Day 1,769,872 people came to St. Paul to attend the fair. Apparently, it is the second largest fair in the US and the largest when you look at daily attendance.

Overall, it was quite an experience. The highlights were:

-the birthing room where you could watch cows, pigs, and rabbits give birth

-Watching young beauty queens have their head sculpted out of butter! I kid you not!  They sit in a refrigerated glass space that keeps rotating so that everyone at the fair can watch the sculpture being made.

-Fried cheese curds! I have never had them before and they were delicious.

-the never ending glass of chocolate milk for $1

-the frozen apple cider pops

-pickle on a stick

-And the biggest highlight of all was Spamville. For those of you who did not know, Austin, Minnesota is the birthplace of Spam. So, what is Spamville, you may ask? It was a spot set up by Hormel where you could buy lots of Spam peraphenalia. This included a variety of flavors of Spam (some of which are not even sold in the US!), t-shirts, wallets, key chains, etc. But, the best part of all, was the Spam throne where for a few minutes, you can become Spam royalty. While I truly enjoyed my short tenure as Spam Queen, (see below) I was not bold enough to try the fried Spam curds being sold outside…

Below are photos of me standing outside Spamville, posing as the Spam Queen, and posing with Arie as prize-winning Minnesota turkeys.
